Google Claims China is Blocking its Gmail Service

Google has claimed that the Chinese government is backing access to its Gmail service after some Chinese users commented on how they were having difficulty in accessing their emails. The company conducted an investigation and discovered that there were no technical problems, meaning that Google itself was not responsible for the error.

The search engine giant commented “There is no technical issue on our side; we have checked extensively. This is a government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail,” in a statement released recently.

However the accusations have been refuted by China, despite widespread fears that the country is cracking down on internet searches in the fear that recent unrest in the Middle East could lead to their own citizens startiong a revolt.

“We do not accept such accusations,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters when asked about a statement by Google issued Sunday. She referred questions on technical matters to the Cabinet’s information office.
