Search Engine Weekly Round-up #31

The Search Engine Weekly Round-up is where I look at the finest articles, talking points and news from the week, all from the worlds of SEO, Marketing, Social Media, etc. This week focuses on two posts which take a different look at link removal, as well as posts on why BuzzFeed doesn’t need Google and why SEO won’t die.

Link Removals – You’re At Risk
Craig Addyman

The first post in this week’s round-up looks at a particularly interesting take on link removals, as Craig Addyman discovered just how alarmingly easy it is to get links removed. After creating a dummy Gmail account, he set about sending out some link removal requests, and has reported his findings in this post.
The alarming nature of this is that 39% of the replies he received were simple confirmations of the removals of the link(s), no questions asked, no further action. As well as this, only 4% of these replies asked for confirmation from the client that it was indeed them. This could mean that requesting link removals via a non-branded email could become an underhanded way to get one up over the opposition.

Why BuzzFeed Doesn’t Need Google
Dustin Verburg

One of the more intriguing posts of the week comes from Dustin Verburg with his post on the Squawk site, taking a look at BuzzFeed, and how the structure they’ve built for themselves means that they may not need Google at all.
Seeing as BuzzFeed post a plethora of duplicate content, as well as advertorials crammed with dofollow links, which Google aren’t exactly fans of. Dustin speaks about how BuzzFeed uses these advertorials and duplicate content, as well as further building it’s brand and taking on our Google overlords. He also speculates that BuzzFeed could be on the receiving end of an Interflora-esque penalty, and if they would even acknowledge it, due to their focus on social as opposed to search.

SEO Tactics Die, But SEO Never Will
Dr. Peter Meyers

I’m sure that you’ve all seen plenty of posts entitled something along the lines of “Is SEO Dead?” – this post from Peter Meyers tells us how whilst certain tactics in the SEO industry may phase out, SEO certainly won’t. There will always be those who want to find, and those who want to be found – and as Peter himself says so very well in this post, “as long as search exists, there will be a need for experts who can optimise information so that it can be easily found”.- Reassuring, eh? This post is wrapped up with Peter speaking about how SEO simply isn’t one tactic, as well as delving into the slightly surreal, looking at the world of Space Egg Optimisation.

Link Penalty and Removal in GIF Form
Barrie Moran

The final post in this week’s round-up essentially book-ends the post, seeing as this post also takes a different look at the link removal process.
One of the most popular pieces in recent weeks has been the Link Building in GIFs post posted by Chris Dyson, which, as you could probably guess, takes a look at link building via assorted GIFs. This post from Barrie Moran on his eponymous site, in a similar vein, looks at the link penalty/removal process using a bunch of GIFs (or JIFs, apparantly), resulting in another hilarious post. If this “____ in GIFs”, is becoming a thing, I can certainly get behind that.
